No Heart

An open letter to HEART.

I am just livid.  This is the absolute last line that has got crossed.  I, like many millions, couldn't wait to hear the song "Barracuda" play for Governor Palin, an exciting gesture to link with her fighting spirit and her nickname of years past.

Dating myself-no doubt that I knew of this song already before being played last night at the Republican's Convention.  But shocked to have learned in this mornings news, that HEART has asked the McCain/Palin campaign to stop playing their song, or for that matter, any of your music, because Governor Palin has different political positions than the music group of Heart

I have just had enough over this angry, divisive, elitist, condescending attitude that I can only guess is coming from Democratic musicians.  I can only guess, because you didn't publicly disclose that when you asked the Republicans to stop playing your music.  HEART could be Independents, maybe you'll come out with an additional statement to clarify that to not risk another group of people from accidentally playing your music.

I am so tired of  musicians sharing with us that only selective groups of people are allowed to hear or play their music.  I am sorry that HEART thought that it demeaned you or your music to have the first Woman vice Presidential candidate for the Republican Party play their music.  Sad that you felt she, this public servant, was not worthy to play your song.  Silly us supporters that thought it was so fitting.  A fighter for the people, nicknamed Barracuda.  Thankfully no one demands from our musicians proof they are allowed to use certain words, phrases or positions or stop the from using words or phrases.  I noticed Ann Wilson came out with a solo album, “Hope and Glory”.  REALLY?

Maybe HEART would like to disclose in advance which political positions you support or which political positions you do not support in advance so none of the wrong people listen, buy your music or pay money to go to one of your concerts.  Maybe the music industry can agree to put a disclaimer before playing every song of who is allowed to listen to the song they are about to play.

Maybe Heart is Democratic and only wish Democrats to listen to their music.  But wait, that won't work, because Democrats within their own party hold many different positions as well.  Some Democrats don't believe there should be wiretapping on citizens or immunity to the companies that were doing the wiretapping illegally.  But wait, their Democratic candidate for President doesn't support that position.  Maybe HEART are Independents that support renewable energy to clean, conserve and protect the environment.  No, that can't be, because John McCain and Governor Palin also support those positions and policy and they are from the Republican Party.

It was so nice for HEART to stomp the heart of the young ones just getting involved in politics and just hearing their song for the first time.  You saved them from getting too excited and possibly wanting to rush out to buy your music.

Really, thank you for making clear there are only select few that should be allowed to hear, play or enjoy your music.  But you will have to advise us which group it is, so we don't run into any embarrassing illegitimate listeners or players in the future.  You may also want to advise all the radio stations or bars that also buy and play your music that only their clients or patrons of a certain political position are allowed in while your music is being played.  Far be it from me to think once a music artist makes their music publicly available for sale, they no longer control who listens to it and how, where, and for who it is played.  Hypocrisy.

Being we keep getting this information getting leaked in dribs and drabs, maybe the music industry can come together to form an alert system that we all can work with and avoid wasting money from accidentally buying the music first, before finding out if we fit your guidelines in political positions.

And if this was an attempt to get attention or publicity for your career revival or concert tour I see you're on, I'm happy to have helped you further, unlike your response to your fans.

Re: No Heart (none / 0)

Umm they own it they have a right to control it. Also if the idiots in the Republican party had listened to word instead of the title and the beat they probably wouldn't have played it. Somewhat counter to the message.

Re: No Heart (none / 0)

Heart has already gone on record with letters asking the McCain campaign to cease and desist. Apparently, as long as John McCain doesn't charge for his events, he can play any music he wants. When I first heard the Repugs play Barricuda last night, I went berserk. I thought "How could Heart have betrayed me?" Well, they didn't.

you certainly have changed YOUR tune... (none / 0)

Your older diaries IMPLIED you a strong Hillary supporter.

" Maybe HEART are Independents that support renewable energy to clean, conserve and protect the environment.  No, that can't be, because John McCain and Governor Palin also support those positions and policy and they are from the Republican Party."

Now, you sure sound the Republic you probably always were?

Thanks for letting us know, Mkay?

God forbid... (none / 0)

...an artist should object to their works being used to promote a political agenda that is 180 degrees removed from their own.

You want sympathy, you came to the wrong place.  I was extremely offended that the Republicans would appropriate a song that is both a classic and totally inappropriate for the message they want to convey.
